Life is tough, no doubt about it. Look at the life of Job. Job was an honest, hard-working man who had amassed great wealth, had many children, was well-respected and above all, feared God. What happened to him? He was afflicted from every direction. His flock was dissipated. His children killed. His health failed and even his friends deserted him and accused him of unconfessed sin.

Many trials come to us in this life. Some are brought on by our own poor choices yet others are allowed by God. Why does God allow trials in our lives?

One reason is to get our attention. When things are going well, we busy ourselves with activities, having fun, and the pleasures of the flesh. When trials come, that is when we turn our focus to God. “Why me? Why now?” we ask.

Perceived correctly, trials provide an opportunity for us to learn something and to grow in some way. If we ignore the lesson, we can be sure we will enoounter the test again. God is always in the process of growing us up and refining our character.

As Rick Warren, author of “Purpose Driven Life” puts it “We are all either going thru a trial, coming out of a trial, or getting ready to go into a trial.” This is life. But take courage, the trials, although not pleasant, are meant for our good. Just as parents discipline their children, so the Lord disciplines us. James 1:2 puts it this way “When troubles come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy!
